Summary

 

Repairs and maintains gasoline/diesel powered automotive and heavy equipment and the individual components and systems associated with the equipment, using standard practices and equipment.  Upon receipt of oral or written instructions, employee exercises independent judgment as to work methods, tools and equipment required.  Responsibilities include major maintenance up to and including the rebuilding of major items, i.e., engines and transmissions.  Responsibilities of this position also include the operation of heavy, medium and light equipment for normal designed usage and for testing after repairs.

 

Essential Job Functions

 

A.    Perform routine maintenance and repair components and systems  of gasoline powered trucks and

                equipment 

1.       Analyze, diagnose and tune gasoline engines, including testing, cleaning and/or replacement of spark plugs, adjusting timing, valves and carburetor, replacing coil, condenser and breaker points or electronic ignition system.

2.       Remove and disassemble major units such as engine, transmission and/or differential; repair and replace parts as required, inspect parts for wear and re-assemble the unit.

3.       Overhaul and replace carburetors, generators, radiators, alternators, starters, distributors and pumps.

4.       Rewire ignition system, lights and instrument panel.

5.       Realign and adjust headlights, and install or repair accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors and windshield wipers

 

B.    Perform maintenance and repair of diesel powered trucks and heavy equipment

  1. Analyze malfunctions; repair and rebuild heavy construction equipment such as motor graders, backhoes, bulldozers, packer/rollers, chip spreaders, etc.
  2. Replace defective engines and subassemblies 
  3. Perform minor overhauls on engines, transmissions, differentials, etc.
  4. Replace or repair major components, attachments or implements such as blades, tracks, compressors, hydraulic cylinders, rails, etc.
  5. Test overhauled equipment to ensure correct operating parameters and overall efficiency

 

C.    Provide information for ordering parts and maintain records

1.       Determine parts and tools required to complete a given repair procedure

2.       Provide description and numbers of parts in order to place orders for parts needed for equipment repair

3.       Maintain files on all equipment, including instruction books, drawings, and schematics

4.       Keep up complete maintenance records for all units of equipment in the department including, complete service records, parts and repair costs, maintenance and service schedules, safety inspections and operations capability of all safety devices

 

 

 

 

D.   Operate a variety of equipment in order to test following repairs and to assist in district operations

  1. Perform complex and difficult operations using a variety of equipment, such as motor grader to perform finishing and grading operations; paving equipment to spread and seal plant mix; backhoe to dig ditches and trenches, set pipe, demolition, and dig stumps and roots; bulldozer, front end loader, scraper, roller, tractor-trailer, backhoe, crane, chip spreader, and other types of heavy equipment
  2. Load and haul various heavy equipment and machinery on low-boy truck and trailer
  3. Oversee and direct the work of other personnel in complex construction and maintenance projects
  4. Provide advise to crew leader on capabilities and best utilization of various types of heavy equipment
  5. Operate electric and acetylene welders as required

 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

 

  1. Knowledge of the operation, repair, and maintenance of gasoline and diesel powered automotive and heavy equipment
  2. Knowledge of safety rules, including accident causation and prevention
  3. Knowledge of first aid procedures
  4. Knowledge of the uses of a wide variety of heavy equipment
  5. Knowledge of math sufficient for understanding precision gauges and measurement for fitting parts
  6. Ability to communicate information to supervisor and co-workers
  7. Ability to complete routine forms, records and to order parts
  8. Ability to read and understand equipment and maintenance manuals, parts lists and instructions
  9. Ability to use hand and machine tools and equipment used in automotive and heavy equipment repair
  10. Ability to use electronic and mechanical shop equipment and machinery
  11. Ability to operate a wide variety of equipment
  12. Ability to analyze and diagnose problems in automotive and heavy construction equipment
  13. Ability to work independently without close supervision
  14. Ability to perform tasks requiring strength, endurance, and dexterity, such as equipment operation and repair

 

Minimum Requirements

 

Vocational School Diploma plus three years of experience in automotive and heavy equipment repairs and maintenance and 5 years experience in operating heavy equipment. 

 

Other :  Valid Commercial Driver’s License with required endorsements is also required.
