Road Maintenance Technician

Summary

 

                Operate light and heavy duty trucks and tractors.  Operate truck equipped with dump body to transport and dump loose materials, such as sand, gravel, crushed rock, or paving materials to designated site.  Perform safety inspection prior to operating equipment and monitor gauges and other equipment while in operation.  Perform routine maintenance.  May operate specialized equipment, such as bulldozers, asphalt roller, motor patrol, etc., occasionally.  Incumbents may be called in to assist in clearing trees, brush, debris, and other hazards during emergencies, both during and after regular business hours. 

 

Essential Job Functions

 

A.            Operate light trucks, tractors, and dump trucks to transport and unload a variety of materials to designated site

 

                1.             Drive tractor with a mower attached in order to cut right-of-way or to disc plow to                prepare surfaces

                2.             Drive light trucks to transport small amounts of materials and specialized                equipment or supplies to construction site

                3.             Operate dump truck to transport dirt, sand, gravel, crushed rock, or paving materials to       designated site; Pull levers or turn crank to tilt body and dump contents; adjust controls         to jerk truck to loosen and dump material adhering to body

                4.             Operate loader in order to load truck

               

B.            Conduct pre-trip safety inspection and perform routine maintenance as needed.

 

                1.             Check oil, fluid levels, tires for condition and tire pressure, etc. prior to operating equipment.

                2.             Monitor gauges and other indicators for nonstandard conditions when equipment is in      operation

                3.             Notify supervisor of any mechanical or safety problems encountered

                4.             Change oil, transmission fluid, and filters as needed

 

C.            Operate specialized equipment occasionally and assists in removing trees, bushes, debris, etc.

 

                1.             Operate specialized equipment such as motor patrol, asphalt roller, bulldozers, etc. as          needed to perform work at a construction site

                2.             Assist in removing trees, bushes, and brush from rights-of-way using chain saw, ax,           bush blade, etc

                3.             Act as flagman as needed

                4.             Clear debris out of bridge culverts and driveway drains

                5.             Patch pot holes in asphalt

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

1.             Knowledge of safe driving and traffic rules and practices

2.             Knowledge of the operation and preventive maintenance requirements of various types of trucks and equipment operated

3.             Knowledge of safety hazards and safety equipment and precautions associated with this type of work

4.             Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions

5.             Ability to perform tasks requiring strength and endurance, such as loading and unloading trucks, clearing trees and debris, etc.

6.             Ability to communicate information to supervisors and co-workers

7.             Ability to operate trucks and equipment safely and in accordance with traffic laws and ordinances

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

                Six months experience in operating trucks, dump trucks, or other heavy equipment, preferred.

NOTE:  Incumbents may be called in to assist in clearing trees, brush, debris, and other hazards during emergencies, both during and after regular business hours. 

 

 

                Other:  Valid Class “B” Certified Drivers License (CDL)
