Summary
Performs a wide variety of
manual tasks to assist in the construction and maintenance of roads and
bridges, grading and maintaining rights of way, and assisting in the herbicide
program of the county. Requirements of this position include the removal of
trees, brush, debris and other emergency hazards outside of normal work hours and as directed by
supervision.
Essential Job
Functions
A. Assist in the construction and maintenance of roads and
bridges, grading and maintaining rights of way, and participate in other
projects of the department as assigned.
1. Clear rights of way, clean out
drainage pipes, pack dirt, pile brush and trash, work concrete, cinders, granite, rocks and other materials
using a variety of gas powered or hand
tools
2. Digs, spread and level dirt and
gravel using pick and shovel
3. Lift and carry materials, tools,
and supplies to the work site and assist with their use as instructed
4. Load and unload trucks of dirt,
supplies and construction materials
5. Mix, pour, and spread concrete,
asphalt, gravel, and other materials using hand tools
6. Join, wrap and seal sections of
pipe
7. Remove forms from set concrete,
fill expansions joints with asphalt, place culvert sections in trenches and assemble sections of pipe
8. Clean tools, equipment, and the
work area, and check fluid levels on motorized tools
9. Assist with mixing chemicals and
spraying operation
10. May operate equipment such as a dump
truck or tractor as needed
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Knowledge of safety rules and practices
2. Ability to understand and follow oral instructions
3. Ability to use
hand and motorized tools
4. Ability to perform strenuous manual labor such as
loading and unloading trucks, mixing, and spreading concrete and asphalt, etc.
Minimum Qualifications
Ability to perform strenuous
tasks involved in road and bridge construction and maintenance in an outside
environment. Construction experience
preferred. Incumbents may be called in
to assist in clearing trees, brush, debris, and other hazards during
emergencies, both during and after regular business hours.
Other
: Valid driver’s license.
